This terracotta group (discovered by the archaeologist Paolo Orsi)
represents a knight carried by a sphinx. It can be dated
back to the second half of the V century b.C. and it was a
part of the decoration of the acroterion on the western
front of the so-called Temple of "Casa Marafioti".
The presence
of the sphinx makes possible to suppose that the young
knight here represented could be a Dioscuros since we can
find many alternative representations in which the Dioscuri
were depicted with one or more sphinxes.
Nowadays this sculpture is preserved at the National Museum
of Reggio Calabria with many other archaeological finds
discovered in the area of the Temple of "Casa Marafioti".
